How to Get an App Developed

If you're like me, you're constantly coming up with ideas that you think could make a great app.

And if you're like me, you don't have the skills to turn those ideas into actual code.

Today's AAAD post is something new - it's a guest post, provided by Michael Kordvani, Chief Editor at

Full disclosure - this is NOT a paid post.

I don't have any relationship whatsoever with - not an employee, or a client.
I'm just a lawyer/tech blogger who is interested in the idea of app development.

Michael asked if he could write a guest post for AAAD, and I agreed. (Frankly, I'm the ideal target customer.)

So away we go!

How to Get an App Developed

In today’s age of technology and devices it’s no wonder that so many people and businesses are turning towards app development. The benefits are endless, as it allows you to not only expand your business but to also create one using apps.

It’s not just businesses who can benefit from app development. Having your very own app - whether that’s a tool, a game, a camera filter and the rest, will only serve to help you earn money or expand your current venture.

Once you’ve decided that you do indeed require an app for whatever it is you’re doing we can move to the very important question.

How do you get an app developed?

There are many different ways but the main three are explained below. Of course you could be a brilliant computer programmer in which case you could write and develop your very own app yourself. If you’re not a master coder then let’s look at the different routes you can explore.

Freelancers are gaining a lot of popularity due to the flexibility of being able to outsource work on a contract to contract basis. This is especially useful for small startups or individuals who require work done but can’t afford a full-time employee.

You can find freelancers for just about anything you could need, including a wide range of skilled people who have the skillset and title of being an app developer. Simply go to a website such as Upwork or Freelance and you can post adverts for your requirements. You’ll then get a list of applicants that you can interview and filter out until you have someone you want to progress your project.

It’s worth agreeing a fee ahead of time rather than opting for hourly payment as costs could quickly spiral out of control. Setting up milestones and having a fixed-price is the best way to ensure you don’t pay more than you should.

Dedicated Companies

App development is big business. For some; it is their business. You can find dedicated companies who have a team containing graphic designers, an app developer (or three), marketing experts etc. These companies will usually offer different packages depending on your needs but you can rest assured knowing they are experts in their field.

By choosing to work with dedicated app development companies you can pitch them your idea, get feedback and discuss different features and growth potential and then relax as they do all the heavy lifting. You might end up spending more than you would for a freelancer but the peace of mind from working with a reputable, respected company is worth the extra money.

Source Code

The last option you can look into is buying source code. This practice is frowned upon by some app developers and if you have absolutely no coding or graphic design skills then you’ll still need to go the freelance or dedicated company route.

The idea is that you purchase the source code for an app. This means that you have the backbone of an idea which you can install onto a device. The next aim is to speak with app developers to discuss changing and adding features, completely editing all of the graphical elements and then eventually having an app which reflects your vision.

The benefit of doing it this way is that you’ll save a lot of time and money with the initial development stage. Rather than hiring an app development team to build your app from the ground up; you can give them a working template which can be pulled apart and rebuilt accordingly.

There is no right or wrong way of getting an app developed. A lot of it all comes down to your needs and the idea you want implementing. You might find it much better to talk to a dedicated company that specializes in app development or perhaps you only need to tweak a few things here and there.

The app industry is still growing and evolving with a huge emphasis now on virtual reality. Despite a saturated market; there has never been a better time to get involved with app development.
